The weave
Silk sarees in the tradition of Varanasi, where the pattern is woven into the cloth on a jacquard loom rather than printed on it. Buttis, borders and pallus are built thread by thread, so the motif shows its floats on the reverse.
Our Banarasi silk sarees are woven on a jacquard loom, so every butti — the small round motif scattered across the body — is part of the cloth itself, not printed on top. Each comes as a full 6.5 m saree with a running blouse, a broad zari-toned border and a striped pallu finished with tassels, at ₹3,599 with free delivery across India.
Turn any of these sarees over. On the reverse you will see the threads floating between motifs: that is how a jacquard butti is made, and it is the quickest way to tell a woven Banarasi from a printed one. The border is woven the same way, which is why it keeps its shape after many drapes.
Single-colour jacquard butti sarees keep the whole drape in one tone — ruby red, wine, navy, rani pink, peacock teal, midnight black, mustard and more — with the gold-toned border doing the talking. Dual-tone Banarasi sarees put one colour in the body and another in the border and pallu, such as emerald with red or rose with maroon, for a younger, more graphic look.
Deep tones — black, wine, navy — are made for receptions and evening functions; ruby and red Banarasi sarees for the wedding day and Karva Chauth; rani pink and teal for festivals; mustard and lime for haldi. As a wedding guest, a single-colour butti saree is the safe, elegant choice.
Dry clean only, store folded in a cotton cloth, and refold every few months so the zari border does not crease. More in our saree care guide. Curious how Banarasi differs from Katan? Read What is Katan silk.
